Spend four nights in New York, one in Philadelphia, two in Washington DC and three in Boston. The cleanest route is New York → Philadelphia → Washington → Boston, using a single longer final train or a short flight if timings are poor.
Days 1–4: New York in neighbourhood-sized pieces
Divide New York by geography rather than by a ranked attraction list. One day for Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn Bridge, one for Midtown and a museum, one for Central Park and the Upper West Side, and one for the Village, Chelsea and whichever neighbourhood you want to revisit.
Four nights still require choices. Book only the experiences with fixed capacity, keep one evening unscripted and avoid crossing Manhattan for a single restaurant reservation.

Day 5: Philadelphia as a real overnight stop
Philadelphia is close enough to tempt a day trip, but staying overnight lets the historic core empty out and makes room for Reading Terminal Market, Old City and a neighbourhood dinner without watching the return train.
Keep the visit compact. The point is not to complete another city; it is to add a smaller, walkable contrast between two capitals of scale and government.
- Stay around Center City or Old City for a one-night stop.
- Travel with luggage you can handle on stairs and busy platforms.
Days 6–7: Washington DC
Use the National Mall as one long axis, not a checklist to sprint end to end. Pair a morning of monuments with one Smithsonian museum, then give the second day to Capitol Hill, Georgetown or another collection.
The museums are substantial and security lines take time. Two nights are the minimum that keep Washington from feeling like a school excursion.

Days 8–10: finish in Boston
The Washington–Boston leg is the longest. Take an early train, consider the faster service when the price difference is reasonable, and treat arrival day as a waterfront and North End evening rather than a major sightseeing day.
Use the remaining days for the Freedom Trail, Beacon Hill, Back Bay and Cambridge. Boston's smaller scale makes it a calmer finish than New York, which is why we prefer ending here when flight options cooperate.
Frequently asked questions
Can I add Niagara Falls?
Not without turning the trip into a transport challenge. Add at least two nights or remove Boston.
Is the train better than flying between these cities?
Usually for New York, Philadelphia and Washington because stations are central. Washington to Boston is the one leg where a flight can compete on total time.
